The provisional result of the parliamentary elections shows that most of the seats at the People’s Majlis were won by the coalition party of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and People’s Alliance (PA).
The provisional result of the country’s first multiparty parliamentary elections was announced on Tuesday night at 10:15pm by the Commissioner of Elections Mohamed Ibrahim. According to the announcement, the DRP won 28 seats while the PA, which is in a coalition with the DRP, won seven seats, in effect giving the DRP-PA coalition 35 seats. The MDP followed DRP closely with 28 seats, while the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (QDP) candidates won two seats. The Jumhooree Party (JP) also won one seat. Independent candidates fared better than both QDP and JP, winning a total of 13 seats.
To win the majority of the 77-seat People’s Majlis, a voting bloc of 39 MPs is required. As such, the DRP and PA coalition has the highest chance to form a majority voting bloc with support of independent candidates. The scenario is given further credibility when considering the fact that some of the DRP and PA supporters had contested in the election as independent candidates.
The provisional results also show that the MDP was able to win seven seats in the Malé constituency while the DRP were able to secure four. Read about more analysis of the elections results here on Haveeru online website.
