It seems the ruling MDP has bought its way to winning the Parliamentary election held on the 9th of May Saturday.
Door to door campaigns telephone campaigns conducted by MDP candidates saw the Maldivian citizens across the country bribed with cash pay outs, aeroplane tickets to India and also drug.
The scale of unpopularity that the ruling part and its President faced was at an all time low, and commentators had doubts about the party winning even one seat. Despite all this ruling MDP won a handsome majority in the Parliament and it came as a shocking surprise to all those who knows what is going on.
On the day of election, loiters allegedly handing abusive drugs, including hash oil, and brown sugar, and the matter was reported to the police.
It emerged this was a tactic used by the ruling MDP’s protecting and supporting thugs all thought the campaigning period and they tried to carry it out during the day of election itself.
In addition to that families with desperately sick children were offered aeroplane tickets and lump cash payouts to take their sick children to India for treatment.
Many of the atolls across the South reported that they had being approached by MDP candidates and offered different kind of bribery. There was a pattern of bribery offers made by MDP candidates. But candidates from DRP, JP, PA and GP were never once noticed engaged in such behaviors.
It is beyond the Maldives police service to investigate any of these allegations, as MDP and Nasheed’s government victimise the heads of all independents organisation including the Maldives Police Service if they try to do anything that threatens the regimes interest.
Therefore even though the alleged incidences of giving out drugs as bribery to voters happened near the ballot boxes we are very concerned these will never get investigated.
